Why are omega-3 so important
for human health?

Omega-3 are polyunsaturated fatty acids which are universal constituents of biological membranes and are essential to a wide number of cellular functions involved in immunity, neuronal function, cell growth and differentiation or lipid metabolism, to name a few.

Omega-3 have widely scientifically proven benefits on heart, eye, brain, mental and bone health and on the control of inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to human beings as we absolutely need them, but we cannot synthetize them. Hence, we have to get them from food.

While individual levels of omega-3 vary across the world, most countries and regions have levels that are considered low to very low. This means that increasing the omega-3 intake is a major challenge for the global population.

Omega-3 enrichment of animal feed is a key path to improved human health

Eating fish is a nice way to increase the omega-3 intake. But at the world scale, there will never be enough fish, and overfishing is a huge sustainability issue.

This is why the improvement of the nutritional features of land animals is so key: eggs, meat and milk will have a better nutritional profile and in particular a better omega-6/omega-3 balance if animals are better fed.

When including an omega-3 source to animal feed, the omega-3 are deposited in the animal body and products, leading to the improved nutritional quality of animal products such as eggs, meat and milk.
